Oh So Beautiful

Fellow Traveler,

Sometimes when I can’t sleep at night, I’ll turn on the radio, keeping the volume low. It’s proven to be a successful way to stop my mind from racing about things I can’t control or don’t need to be thinking about. I’ll wake up hours later with it still playing music, commenting on the latest news story, or preaching a sermon. Early this morning it was tuned to Family Radio, where hymns are mixed with bible reading and an occasional message. Today, let me say something about the music we hear and emphasize the importance of listening to God glorifying, edifying, and didactic worship songs.

At my desk is an old hymnal, published in 1847 with a third page that’s been glued in that says, “This Book May be Kept Four Weeks” – “Stockton Free Public Library” – “Given Out” – with a signature in pencil below on the blank page. “to Miss Mary Mensell.” The leather bound edition’s first section of 254 pages consists of the Psalms put to meter, so they can be sung to familiar tunes. The remainder of the 735 pages are titled “Hymns for Public Worship.” The Presbyterian Publication Committee compiled the tome, which contains very few songs that would be familiar to us today, actually. Christian music changes through the years, in some cases dramatically – and in some cases drastically.

The old hymns were first of all based on scripture and doctrinally filled. They were focused on biblical worship, God’s person and work, and our need to know and love Him more.

All hail the power of Jesus’ Name! Let angels prostrate fall;
Bring forth the royal diadem, And crown him Lord of all.
Ye seed of Israel’s chosen race, Ye ransomed from the fall,
Hail him who saves you by his grace, And crown him Lord of all.
Let every kindred, every tribe, On this terrestrial ball,
To him all majesty ascribe, And crown him Lord of all.

Compare those lyrics to the following written by Chasen.

Everybody’s been there everyone’s the same
but mostly we don’t care isn’t that a shame
We bring us down face after face
the inside is beautiful but the outside we want to change.
We want to change.
Whoa you’re oh so beautiful, you don’t need anyone’s approval
You’ve got to believe in your self you know you are
You’re crazy beautiful
Well every new year you say your gonna change
From the way you live to how much you weigh,
we don’t want to change.
(It goes on, repeating itself for more than a dozen more lines)

The important thing to note here is that in this modern song, the one who is beautiful isn’t God, it’s a man (or woman). This is the extreme form of where contemporary music can lead. The less extreme worship songs have little to no biblical truth or doctrine and could be applied to Krishna or any other man-made deity. Beware!

May God give us discernment in our choice of heavenly acceptable worship music.

Warriors All

Fellow Traveler,

Researching your family tree is both wearisome and rewarding. I’ve been doing it for years, at first running into a big wall at our Atlantic shore. I couldn’t find any ancestry on the other side of the pond. Since then the whole “find your ancestors” boom has changed all that, and I’ve recently been able to find my Scottish, English, and Welsh roots. And not just back to the 17th and 18th centuries, but back to the 9th century. Although somewhat meaningless considering the millions of folks related to me, it does offer a glimpse into a history that was meaningless before. If nothing else, tracing your roots opens the history books like nothing else and gives you a fascinating perspective on your place in the world.

My Scottish and Welsh family connects me to Robert the Bruce and Rhodri the Great, both fierce warrior kings in the 14th and 9th centuries. The Bruce fought and won Scotland’s independence from England’s King Edward. Rhodri, wanting Welsh independence, won two battles against the Welsh Vikings, but lost his life in battle during a Saxon invasion of Wales. My ancestors, like yours, were willing to give up their lives for a cause. They were warriors against tyranny and injustice – military men who stood for what they thought in their hearts was right.

The Apostle Paul repeatedly exhorts us to put on the whole armor of God and “stand fast.” He uses that expression in regard to truth and doctrine six times in his letters. “Watch, stand fast in the faith, be brave, be strong.” I Corinthians 16:13. “Therefore, my beloved and longed-for brethren, my joy and crown, so stand fast in the Lord, beloved.” Philippians 4:1. And in 2 Thessalonians 2:15, he says, “Therefore, brethren, stand fast and hold the traditions which you were taught, whether by word or our epistle.” The Apostle Jude echoes his words, “I found it necessary to write to you exhorting you to contend earnestly for the faith which was once for all delivered to the saints.” Jude 3b.

Am I standing fast for the truths in God’s Word, or am I just going along with the lowest common denominators of popular sentiment? Am I willing to call those “major” issues that many in our modern churches are calling “minor?” Am I able to defend my points using Scripture alone? Do I know church history and the Bible well enough to defend my views? As a lowly sheep in Christ’s fold, am I wary enough to discern false doctrine? Jesus told the twelve, “Behold, I send you out as sheep in the midst of wolves. Therefore be wise as serpents and harmless as doves.” Matthew 10:16. Am I a warrior for truth?

Lord, give me more of a hunger for your word that I might know You more deeply. May I have more of a zeal for what pleases You as revealed in Your word. As I ask for doctrinal discernment that only comes from You, strengthen me that I might not fear my adversaries, whether outside or inside the church. Amen.

SKINNER ANCESTRY TO ROBERT THE BRUCE KING OF SCOTS THROUGH CARA SKINNER’S MOTHER
Dave’s 23rd Gr-Grandfather

Robert I Bruce King of Scots – 1274-1329 – Robert the Bruce
– 1st Wife – Isabella of Mar – Countess of Carrick – 1277-1296

Sir Walter Stewart – 6th High Steward of Scotland – 1293-1326 – Sir Walter Stewart
– Marjorie Bruce – Princess of Scotland – 1296-1316 – Robert II’s birth was considered something of a miracle since he was delivered by caesarian section from his mother’s body who died after a fall from her horse.

Robert II Stewart King of Scotland – 1316-1390 – Robert II
When Robert II came to throne, a fourteen years’ truce with England still had twelve years to run, though unofficial warfare on the border continued with England. Full scale war broke out in 1385 as a by-product of the Hundred Years’ War between England and France. Scotland became involved through assistance to France. Throughout this period Robert II was ever weak in his control of the state. In 1384 he appointed his heir John, Earl of Carrick, to enforce authority on his behalf.
– Wife – Elizabeth Mure of Rowallan – 1320-1354 – Elizabeth Mure

Elizabeth was Robert II’s first wife, to whom he was related within the “forbidden degrees” of kinship. This required a papal dispensation to have their marriage and heirs recognized by the church and state. Robert II and Elizabeth may not have at first known of this requirement, for it was some years after the birth of their children that they applied for dispensation. This became a growing concern of Robert II’s second family and heirs from his marriage to Euphemia of Ross following Elizabeth’s death.

Robert III Stewart King of Scotland – 1337-1406 – Robert III
John, Earl of Carrick, moved to the throne as Robert III. Robert III was considered a weak ruler. He delegated much of his authority to his brother, Robert, Earl of Fife (later Duke of Albany and Governor of Scotland). In 1393 Robert III decided to resume his responsibilities and relieved his brother of authority. In 1399 Robert III delegated his authority to his eldest son David, Duke of Rothesay. In 1401 David, who had proven himself incompetent to govern & refused to resign at his father’s request was arrested and placed in his brother Robert’s custody where he died in 1406.

On the Bench

Fellow Traveler,

I remember listening to an old Focus on the Family radio broadcast where James Dobson had talked to a high school girl. She was struggling with the repetitive, non-eventful, painful routine of her life. She told him, “Life is so . . . so . . . so . . . DAILY!”

She had learned at an early age that these 24 hours we’re given are a constant this side of eternity. The sun rises and sets with absolute precision. The moon goes through its perpetual phases, occasionally punctuated with an eclipse. When you’re a kid the days seem so long, the years trudge by, and life changes are barely discernible. And then you grow up, get older and try to slow things down as the days and years start whizzing by.

These last few years have been flying by for me and many of you. We experience old age taking a toll on our body. Our strength level is falling by 50% or more, and our pain level is increasing by the same amount. Getting through the day isn’t as easy as it used to be. Project hours around the house are fewer on Saturdays as naps become more frequent. And Sundays have always been a no or little work day, thankfully.

The Psalmist knew something of this and tells us in Psalm 71:9 –

“Do not cast me off in the time of old age;
do not forsake me when my strength fails.”

It is certain – your strength will fail if you live long enough. We are prone to fear that God will set us aside, but we learn that He can give us new ministries that match our lower energy level. We can pray for others more, pick up the phone more, visit more, write more letters, and be closer to Him through more bible study time.

Lord, as you give daily bread, you give daily strength – let us call on You for enthusiasm, fulfillment, and direction that will glorify You as our earthly days will soon be traded for one heavenly, eternal day.
